Bernuthsfeld Tunic

Hans Hahne (1875-1935) / Public domain

Over a thousand years ago an unlucky man, either by natural causes or as a human sacrifice ended up buried in a peat bog in Hogehahn in Lower Saxony, Germany. We know this because his well-preserved body was uncovered in 1907.
Amazingly intact, one of the most intriguing items found with this man was his tunic. This highly unusual garment was assembled from 45 pieces of 20 different kinds of cloth.
Why he wore such an unusual article of clothing is lost to history, but tunics inspired by its design are available from modern reenactment clothiers such as Burgschneider (although their tunics are made from solid pieces of cloth)
